Purifying Your Thoughts - Ki Seitzei || download

It's one level to stop doing a forbidden action, but it's an entirely different level to let go of it from your thoughts.  How do we begin this type of deep soul cleaning?  In this talk we look into how the Torah teaches us to wage battle against our yetzer harah's, our negative inclinations, and provides us with a blueprint for scaling spiritual heights.

Living with Doubt || download given on August 12, 2007

       I want to talk about a subject that I don't hear discussed that often which is doubt. A lot of us experience doubt even at the same time we experience faith. We think "you know there must be something wrong with me, if I have questions in my mind. It must mean I don't really believe, because if I did how could I have questions?" So what I'm trying to do in this talk today is to talk on a cosmic level, about how Gd made doubt, and that one can experience doubt even in the presence of belief, and that doesn't wipe out the good of the belief. You know sometimes you've got the wrong shoes and you get a callous on your toe. You don't change your life upside down because you've got a callous on your toe. It's part of the normal order of things.

        I was having lunch with a friend of mine a few weeks ago and I asked him, "Where is your car parked?" And he pointed across the street. And I said, "Do you realize that you can't walk to your car without swimming in godliness?" And you have to understand that this is the essence of the Shema. When we say, "Shema Yisrael, Hashem Elokenu, Hashem echad!" that "Hashem, You are one," what are we saying? We're saying that it's all God. The entire world is wall-to-wall God. Not only does G-d fill the world, but He exists unimaginable dimensions beyond the world as well. In this talk we talk about His Oneness and how grasping that can change our lives.

The Bumpy Road to Salvation– Yisro || download | Given on Feb 15, 2009

We discuss what salvation feels like in this week's talk.  This week's Torah portion begins with the words "And Yisro heard".  What did Yisro, the father-in-law of Moshe, hear that caused him to travel to Jewish people?  Rashi, quoting the Gemara, says he heard about the splitting of the sea, and the war with Amalek.  Amazingly, a few verses later (Ex. 18:8) Moshe tells Yisro about "all the troubles" that had befallen the Jewish people since they left Egypt and how Hashem rescued them.  What troubles is Moshe referring to?  Rashi says, the splitting of the sea, and the war with Amalek!  The very same events!  How can that be?  This is the subject for today's talk -- the difference between hearing about a great salvation and experiencing one, and how that relates to our lives today.

Making Sense of the Hard Times After the Good TimesBeshalach download | Given on Feb 8, 2009

Most people when asked will tell you that the greatest single miracle that Hashem performed was the splitting of the Sea.  So overwhelming is that event that relatively little attention is paid to the event that immediately follows.  Moshe leads the Jewish people to the wilderness of Sur where there is nothing to drink for THREE DAYS!  Putting aside the irony of walking through water and then not having any, what is Hashem trying to teach us by juxtaposing these two extreme events in our life?  Moreover, I wonder, what is the more difficult experience -- the hard time that follows another hard time?  Or the hard time that follows the really good time?  And what does all of this have to do with the ultimate paradox in Torah -- the par adumah -- the ashes of the red heifer?  Finally, we take a look at the difference between waiting and humility with a detour into alchemy.

The Amazing Re-Appearing Mitzvah – Bo  || download | Given on Feb 1, 2009

In this week's Torah Portion, we have a verse (Ex 12:10) with two separate mitzvahs in it.  The first mitzvah is to finish eating the whole korbon Pesach, the Passover lamb offering, and not leave over any of it till the morning.  The second mitzvah contained in this same verse, instructs us to burn whatever is left over of the Passover offering the next morning.  The question is, how can we burn what is left over of it -- if we've already been commanded not to leave anything over of it?!  The answer gives us a deep insight into the Torah and life and opens our eyes to realizing how we are never alone.

Quantity vs. Quality ||  download | Given on January 25, 2009

We begin this talk with a further discussion of the "garments" Hashem gave Adam and Chava in the Garden of Eden.  It ushered in the transformation of humanity, our going from creatures of light to creatures (of light) encased in skin.  Learning from the Hassidic Master the Bnei Yissacher we see very cool secrets about the process and the future of humanity in the final letters of the words themselves.  We also discuss the teaching from Pirkei Avos 4:11 about one who keeps the Torah in poverty will come to keep it in wealth, and levels in how to understand that.  Somehow (!) this leads to a discussion of psychics and Jewish law.

Back To The Garden of Eden -- Shemot || download | Given on January 18, 2009

We just began a new book in the Torah.  The book of Shemos or Exodus is both the account of the Jewish people's enslavement in Egypt and also our redemption.  On a deeper level, it's not just that Hashem and Moshe are taking us to Israel -- remember we were in Israel already with Avraham, Yitzhak, and Yaakov -- it's that we are leaving Egypt and GOING BACK to Israel.  That's a very big difference!  On a cosmic level  this correlates with our exile from the Garden of Eden and the return that we are heading toward with arrival of Mashiach and the perfection of the world.  And it all begins with Moshe noticing the burning bush -- a sight that according to the Kotzker Rebbe -- others saw, but none bothered to investigate.  In other words, when we endeavor to search for the truth, Hashem brings salvation into the world.

Maybe I'm Not In a Crisis – Parasha Vayechi || download | Given on January 18, 2009

Lots to talk about today.  First, having just finished the book of Breisheis, we say "Chazak, Chazak, V'Nitchazayk" -- Be Strong, Be Strong, and Have Good Courage!  But what do we need courage for?  We just finished the task!  It's like wishing someone a good trip after they've already come home!  Next, we speak of Hashem like He is our King and Our Master, and Our Love -- which is it?  Is Judaism schizophrenic?  We cover a way of visualizing our most important relationship in a way that encompasses the varying aspects in one.  Finally, we discuss what this means: "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of G-d like waters fill the ocean" Isaiah 11:9.  Isn't the ocean nothing more than water?!  So how can the waters fill the ocean -- if the ocean is only water?!

Rivers, Mikvahs, and Saying Something Nice - Vayigash || download | Given on January 4, 2009

We have a powerful concept in Torah that says that even if something learns Torah not for the sake of Heaven, that person will come to learn for the sake of Heaven.  In today's talk, we develop this notion of Divine flow, and connect it to the purifying dynamics of mikvah, a river, and saying something nice.

What is Your Success Fantasy? || download | Given on Dec. 28, 2008

We're entering into a new month - Teves - with a personality all it's own.  Since all things are encompassed within Torah, every piece contains a taste of the whole.  We will look at this special month from the point of view of (as always) The Human Condition, it's special letter, tribe, relationship with Chanukah -- the works!

Hanukah - The Fixing of Randomness - 2008 || download | Given on Dec. 21, 2008

Hanukah - much needed light in the darkest time of year.  Historically, this was the last holiday that was incorporated into the Jewish calendar.  It is sending a message to us for all of history until the world is redeemed -- that Hashem, so to speak, is keeping the porch lights on for us until we all come back home.  One the special things about Hanukah is the dreidel.  What does it tells us about our lives, and how to live them more purposefully and deeply?

Why Shouldn't I? - Understanding the Thou Shall Nots in the Torah || download | Given on Dec. 14, 2008

Everyone knows there are 613 mitzvahs.  These consist of 248 positive actions to be taken and 365 negative actions to refrain from.  Since we are here in large part to fix the world -- I would have thought that the number of positive actions would greatly outweigh those actions which are to be avoided -- and yet we see that it is the opposite.  Obviously, there is a great spiritual benefit and fixing that is done as a result of NOT doing certain things.  But what is it?  In this talk we look into some deep teachings from the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the Tikunay Zohar on the subject and trace it back to Adam and Eve, and as always, you and me.

The Meaning of Coincidences Vayyatze 2008 || download | Given on Dec. 7, 2008

I just returned home from a trip to Israel.  I arrived Monday afternoon and left late Thursday night.  It was a whirlwind to say the least!  As so many of us know, whenever you are there you feel G-d's hand the strongest.  You run into people you never expected to, you think about others and they appear around the next corner -- the works.  Well, this trip was no different, and it got me thinking about the meaning of these happenings in our lives, and what we are supposed to do with them.

Why is G-d Testing Me?  || download | Given on Nov. 16, 2008

          What happens when we are given a test?  So often we view it as a hardship, hope our best we pass it and then if we make it to the other side in one piece, consider ourselves lucky!  But on a much deeper level, the process of undergoing a test involves on the deepest level a journey into the creation of self.  Seen through the lens of the greatest test ever given an individual -- the binding of Yitzhak, we explore how all this relates to our own lives.

In Trouble?  Keep Moving!  -  Lech Lecha 2008 || download | Given on Nov. 9, 2008

          What do you do after your world is destroyed around you?  The answer is, you keep moving.  Last week's Parsha was Noach which chronicles the great flood that destroyed the world.  This week's Parsha is Lech Lecha, which spells out Hashem's divine command to our holy father Avraham to journey forth to the place that Hashem will show Him.  Hashem doesn't even tell Avraham where to go!  This was to give Avraham and Sarah even more reward.  We don't always need to know where our mitzvahs are taking us.  The key thing is to do them with all our hearts and not to ever ever stop.

It's Raining Blessings - Cheshvan 2008  || download | Given on Nov. 2, 2008

          The month that we are in right now Cheshvan, has an amazing duel character to it.  On the one hand it is the month that Hashem brought the great flood to the world in the time of Noah.  On the other hand our Sages teach that it will be the month where the 3rd Holy Temple will be inaugurated.  When we probe deeper into the nature of the month we see that both outcomes are due to a tremendous down pour of light.  Why then do they manifest themselves in such radically different ways?  And what can we do in our own lives to ensure that we are able to hold on to the blessings?

The Torah is New All Over Again - Breisheis 2008 || download | Given on Oct. 26, 2008

          We made it through the holidays and are now ready to plunge into the new year!  What better gift from Above then being able to start the Torah again.  Because the Torah is infinite, Hashem in His goodness, grants us increasing depth into our understanding of it.  It may be the same sequence of letters, with the same mitzvahs, but believe me -- we are standing before a new Torah!  How does this work exactly?  This is the subject of today's talk (there's also a little discussion of evolution and the age of universe).

The Light of Succos || download | Given on Oct. 12, 2008

          In today's talk we look at Succos as the creation of the physical world.

The King is Coming - Yom Kippur 2008 || download | Given on Oct. 5 , 2008

                Can you  imagine being so close to someone that you are actually in physical contact with them, and yet at the same time being so far away?  This is what happens when you stand "back to back" with another.  You are so near and yet you don't see them at all.  For so many of us this is our relationship with Hashem.  He is closer than close, and yet we seldom turn to Him and face Him directly.  Yom Kippur is coming!  It's the greatest day of the year!  In this talk we talk about the process of turning to Hashem so that we can face Him directly in all His Majesty and Goodness.

The Last Day of The Year || download | Given on Sept. 28, 2008

          The last day of the year presents special opportunities for spiritual elevation that are unique to it. The mitzvah that correlates with this day is prohibition not to cut your Payus. How does that connect with Rosh Hashana and reflexology? For that you'll have to listen!
May this year see the answer to all of all prayers for the good!

Bringing Yourself as an Offering to G-d || download | Given on Sept. 21, 2008

          Who does this world belong to?  Who do we belong to?  What does it mean to make G-d King?  And even if we want to do it, how do we begin?  This week's Torah portion speaks of taking the first fruits, putting them in a basket, and bringing them to Hashem.  As Rosh Hashanah approaches, on a deeper level, we too, are asked to gather our lives to present before Hashem.  In today's talk, we discuss how to start the process.

Achieving Simplicity Elul  || download | Given on Sept. 14, 2008

In explaining what goes on in these talks to someone at work, I surprised myself by saying that it's a little like "couples therapy" between us and G-d.  Toward that end, this week's talk has lots of ideas relating to relating to G-d, especially in light of the New Year fast approaching.  Eventually, we build to the idea of the importance of simplifying our lives so that we can better focus on what really matters.

Elul - Keeping the Love Alive || download | Given on August 30, 2008

We've entered the month of Elul which means that the new year with all it's decrees and judgements are around the corner!  It's both exciting and a little scary, but Hashem is good so we don't have to be afraid!  Hashem gives us Elul, this last month of the year, to finish on a strong note.  How do we do it?  Well, that's a big subject, but we begin the discussion in this week's talk with a look at the importance of appreciating the present moment and also a look at false prophets.

The Battle against Sadness – Ekev – 2008 || download | Given on August 24 2008

What is lower than the heal of your foot?  Ekev or "heel" in Torah stands for so many things -- from the actual bottom of your body, to spiritual insensitivity, to the end of days.  It can also stand for the emotional lows we all reach.  In this talk we look at the interplay between the first two words of the Parsha and strategies we can learn for combating sadness when it comes.

Reversal of Fortune - From Tisha B'Av to Tu B'Av || download | Given on August 3, 2008

          Just days after the saddest day on the Jewish calendar comes one of the happiest!  It comes to teach that Hashem's salvations can arrive in the blink of an eye.  We explore this concept and the role that the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai plays in this process as well in this week's talk.

8 Instances Moshe Doesn't Know the Halacha || - Mattos 2008 download | Given on July 27, 2008

          It's amazing how deep and intricate G-d's guidance of the world is.  We see it in so many ways.  One instance is the times the law is concealed from Moshe's eyes.  The Sages explain that this happens for different reasons.  Sometimes it's in order to give merit to the one who desires to know, sometimes Moshe forgets because of anger, sometimes it's to bring praise to Moshe, another time it's to fix his past deeds!  In today's talk we go through each case and learn some clues on how to get our own name in the Torah!

Women in Torah - Pinchas || download | Given on July 20, 2008

          What is the difference between men and women in Torah?  How are we to understand the separation of men and women during prayer?  Is it fair that men have more mitzvahs than women?  Tzelafchad's daughters are heroes in the Torah.  Starting with a detailed discussion of what they accomplished and how it applies to us today, we turn to a more general discussion of the different genders in light of the equality of the sexes we see in today's society.

If I Become Religious I'm Afraid I Will Disappear - Balak || download | Given on July 13, 2008

          As many of us begin our adventure learning Torah we experience a mix of emotions.  On the one hand, we are overwhelmed with the depth, beauty and vastness of it all.  On the other hand, taking on the practical observances are often downright scary.  Whether we are able to articulate it or not, many of us feel an existential sense that if I go down this path I will disappear!  First and foremost -- don't be afraid!  What awaits you is the fullest blossoming of your truest self.  In this talk we explore this dynamic and how it works.

Finding Your Way Back to G-d || download | Given on July 6, 2008

            So many us grew up in families where even though they were loving didn't impart Jewish educations to us.  Now later in life we feel the calling of our souls and want to connect with Hashem and the Torah more deeply.  The process is often a very complicated one.  How do we navigate through all the ups and downs?  In this talk we discuss some of the issues.

Acceptance vs. Holy Chutzpah - Korach 2008 || download || Given On June 29, 2008

Korach led a rebellion in the desert against Moshe.  He seemingly had everything and yet he lost it all.  Pinchas was denied the priesthood among the Jews, remained silent, and then was miraculously granted it by G-d.  When do we accept what Hashem is sending our way graciously and not put up a fight?  When do we stand up and not let the matter drop?  It's a very fine line, and one we explore in today's talk.  The format for today is a little different.  Today's class is a question and answer session.

 Serving G-d Amidst Confusion || download  || Given On June 22, 2008

          Our Rabbis teach that Avraham was tested with ten tests, and that the Jews in the desert were also tested ten times.  The big difference is that Avraham passed all ten and we seem to have failed all ten!  Rabbi Wolfson notes that in both instances the tenth test was the same.  For Avraham it was the Akeidah, also known as the binding of Isaac.  For the Jews it was the sin of spies.  Rabbi Wolfson says in both instances the test was, how do we serve G-d when we are in a state of confusion.  In this talk we examine both tests and see how we can learn tools to apply to the confusing moments in our own lives.

G-d's Big Strong Hugs || download || Given On June 15, 2008

          I named this series of talks "Living with G-d: Spiritual Tools for an Outrageous World" partly because of a teaching I heard from Rabbi Green.  He said that most romantic movies end when the man and the woman finally get each other.  But what happens after that?  How do they live a happy life together?  "That's the part I want to know!"  We have G-d!  G-d most certainly has us!  Now what??  In this talk we continue to look into this "now what??" dynamic -- or what it means to see all of life as an ongoing conversation with G-d -- and how we can make the most of it.

Making Sure Reverence Doesn't Become a Straight Jacket || download || Given On June 8, 2008

          There is an amazing Gemara in Shabbos 89a, where Moshe is in Heaven standing before Hashem and Hashem says to Moshe, "Don't they greet each other in your city?"  In other words, Hashem chastens Moshe for just standing there and not saying Hello!  What does this mean and what can it teach us about interacting with Hashem on a day to day basis?  Clearly, Moshe was standing in silence out of respect and yet Hashem clearly wanted more from him -- what exactly?  We look into this question and others in today's talk.

Seeing The Sinai Experience in the Word "Sinai" || download || Given On June 1, 2008

          The Torah is so deep.  It's working on an infinite number of levels.  So could it possibly be that the word "Sinai" doesn't contain within it a picture of the Sinai experience itself?  In today's talk we go letter by letter through the word and revisit that great event that is still happening.

Fame, Immortality and the Denial of G-d || download || Given On May 25, 2008

          A recent survey asked kids what they want to be when they grow up.  Amazingly, the top answer was "famous".  We live in a time that is currently in the grip of a cult of celebrity.  The question is, why?  In this talk, I look at some of the spiritual underpinnings to this phenomenon, especially with regard to the immortality of the soul.

How Can I Be Wrong When I Know I'm Right? || download || Given on May 18, 2008

          One of the maddening aspects of the human condition is being put in the position where it seems pretty clear that we know better than G-d.  On the one hand, we know this is absurd!  On the other hand, it sure looks like our take on the situation is better than the one the Torah says we should take in the moment.  In this talk we discuss this dynamic and some ways of rethinking it.

Pesach Sheni || download || given on May 11, 2008

          This talk is about one of the greatest days in the Jewish Calendar -- Pesach Sheni -- the day that celebrates how Hashem gives all of us second chances --- and as Reb Shlomo says, "Who among us doesn't need a second chance?"   I also discuss the tension that exists within all of us between perfection and imperfection, between our G-dly souls, and the human aspect of us that somehow never gets it quite right.  Appropriately, the tape stops about 25 minutes into the talk!  I will recap the missing pieces in the next talk.  Meanwhile, have a great week, and if you can, try and eat some matzah on Sunday night the 18th for Pesach Sheni -- it's a Holy custom.

The Passover Seder - Restoring Order to the Universe || download || Given on April 13.  2008

          Everybody knows the word Seder in Hebrew means "order".  And yet anyone who has participated in one, knows that this most "ordered" process seems to be riddled with chaos!  Drawing from a new Haggadah from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt'l, we look into the how the Holy Arizal arranged his seder plate and how this holds a key to understanding what we are trying to accomplish this most special of nights!

The Sun and the Moon and the Nature of Time || download || given on April 6, 2008

The Jewish concept of time is so deep.  In Hebrew the word for year is shana which also means to repeat.  The word for month is chodesh which also means to make new.  These two ideas are contradictory.  On the one hand, we seem to be stuck in the repetitive aspect of nature.  On the other hand, there is an aspect of time which promises something completely new.  The Jewish leap year, reconciles these two competing dynamics.  How?  Drawing from the teachings of the great Rabbi Moshe Shapiro, we delve into these questions and more!

Money || download || given on March 30, 2008

          What is the Jewish view of money?  In today's talk we take a look at the prayer we say for our livelihood three times a day and discover that it doesn't mention money once!  What are our holy Sages trying to teach us?

If I Believed Yesterday Why Don't I Believe Today || download || given on March 23 2008

            Why is "belief" so fleeting?  This talk is another in a series of attempts to outline some of the basic principals of what I've come to call the "Physics of Spirituality".  In this talk I look into some of the reasons why Hashem created the world in a way that belief must be constantly renewed, and some of the ways that we can be successful in staying on the right side of things with Hashem's help!
